Top Places We Visited On Our Trip

Meghalaya had so much to offer, and we were excited to immerse ourselves in every wonderful experience. Here are the top highlights of our trip:

 1.      Umiam Lake

On the second day of our trip, we visited the stunning Umiam Lake. Its breathtaking beauty provided a soothing escape as we sat by the lake, sipping tea and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere. Visiting in the morning, when nature is at its best and there are fewer people around, made the experience even more magical. Undoubtedly, Umiam Lake is one of the top tourist attractions in Shillong, and we feel fortunate to have witnessed its beauty.

2. Mawsmai Caves

Located in Cherrapunji, these beautiful caves offer alluring landscapes to explore. We had a great time taking loads of photographs and videos here.

3. Double- Decker Bridge

Visiting Jingkieng Nongriat was one of the best highlights of our trip. Also known as the Double Decker Living Root Bridges, we had to trek our way up to the place, and even though it was a bit tiring, the beauty and charm of the place made us feel totally worth our effort.

4. Dawki

Boating on the clear waters of Dawki river was undoubtedly the best experience of our trip. The river bed adorned with beautiful stones and greenery was a mesmerizing sight to behold. We could see the river bed through the clear waters and it felt as if we were floating in the air. It was truly an experience of a lifetime and we highly recommend visiting Dawki during winters when the water is crystal clear.

 Our Hotels

On our Meghalaya tour in December, we stayed at three accommodations and all of them were really comforting and hospitable. Thanks to Carrnivaltrips, we got lucky with the dwellings and they helped us relax a huge deal on our trip. Here are three of the places we stayed at.

1. Hotel Eee Cee

During our first two days in Meghalaya, we had the pleasure of staying at the beautiful Hotel Eee Cee in Shillong. This hotel offered us a comfortable and relaxing stay, and its location near the local markets made it convenient for us to shop. The hotel also provided us with breakfast on both days, which gave us the opportunity to taste some delicious Meghalayan cuisine. Overall, our experience at Hotel Eee Cee was wonderful.

2. Hill Top Castle

During our trip to Meghalaya, we had the opportunity to stay at a lovely homestay in Cherrapunji for 2 days. The location of the homestay was perfect as it offered us stunning views of the surrounding area, providing a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere to unwind. The staff at the homestay were very helpful and accommodating, always available to assist with any needs or concerns we had. Overall, our stay at this homestay was fantastic, allowing us to enjoy our trip without any worries.

3. Hotel Saad

During the last two days of our trip, we stayed in Shillong and we were pleased with our accommodation at Hotel Saad. It was the perfect place for a relaxing end to our trip. Our stay was especially memorable because we were there on December 31st and celebrated New Year's Eve at the hotel. The hotel was well-maintained and the service was excellent, making our stay truly enjoyable.

How To Reach Meghalaya

As our family resides in Pune, we took a flight from there to New Delhi and then another one to Guwahati. Upon our arrival in Guwahati, the Carrnivaltrips agent greeted and assisted us in boarding a cab to Meghalaya. We opted to book the cab for the entire duration of our 6-day trip and it turned out to be a wise decision, as it provided us with a comfortable and hassle-free mode of transportation throughout our journey.

Our Budget For The Trip

Despite being a group of six people, we didn't incur high personal expenses during our trip to Meghalaya as we mainly spent money on food and entry tickets to tourist attractions. The cost of food in Meghalaya was quite affordable, and so were the entry tickets to various places. Overall, our daily personal expenses added up to only INR 3000 for the entire group.

Shopping In Meghalaya

We were pleased to find that all the hotels we stayed in during our trip to Meghalaya were located near local markets, allowing us to shop at our leisure without worrying about the time. We picked up many souvenirs, including fridge magnets, natural cane speakers, and handcrafted coasters for our family members. We highly recommend shopping for locally made products in Meghalaya's markets, as they are beautifully crafted and unique. Bamboo handicrafts, shawls, Scottish cloth, and fresh fruits are other items you can also find in the markets. Our shopping experience in Meghalaya was fantastic and brought back many fond memories.

Meghalaya Food

During our 6-day trip to Meghalaya, we had the opportunity to try out many local restaurants while traveling from one spot to another. We were pleasantly surprised by the delicious local cuisine at Hotel Eee Cee, where we tried dishes such as Jadoh (rice with meat), pickled bamboo shoots, and Tungrymbai (fermented soybean dish). While we expected the local food to be tasty, we were equally impressed by the quality of North Indian and Chinese food available in the region. Overall, we found the Meghalaya cuisine to be delicious and made with love, and would highly recommend trying out the local specialties when visiting the state.
